Contract Awards Summary

How To Use the Contract Awards Summary:

All numbers and charts are in real dollars. The chart immediately below tracks cumulative awards for all categories of construction in PB&E' s five-state area. The last two years are shown in their entirety for comparison. The five

year-to-date-by-state charts on the right are on different scales because each state's market is unique. The middle left table is of monthly awards. The figures are not year-to-date. The text in the middle explains the highlights and details of the monthly contract awards, with an emphasis on the projects and categories that affected the awards totals the most. The table along the bottom of the page breaks out year-to-date figures for the seven categories of construction in all five states. The percentage figures to the right of the largest categories and the totals show how the year-to-date figure has changed from the previous year. All charts and tables are based on contract-awards data that is reported publicly.

THE TOTAL VALUE OF PUBLICLY REPORTED CONTRACT AWARDS in the Northwest during 2004 topped $7.1 billion in November. It marks the first time since PB&E started publishing the Contract Awards Summary more than two decades ago that the five states have contracted more than $7 billion in construction work during a single calendar year, and there is still a month to go. The Transportation category in Idaho was a standout during the month, reporting contract awards in excess of $63 million. The state's most expensive highway project was $21 million for the reconstruction and widening U.S. Highway 91 to four lanes from Utah Street Lane to Preston, Idaho, including four-lane bridges at Cub River, Cub Overflow, Cub Canal, and Spring Creek. Only Alaska had a more expensive transportation project, replacement of the Kenai River Bridge and associated road improvements on the Sterling Highway at Soldotna, with a price tag of $28.3 million.
