Dec. 2--September was a good month for Eugene businessman Al Pierce.

Pierce sold two big chunks of industrial land off Springfield's Marcola Road: 22.5 acres to the Oregon Military Department for a new armory, and 2.4 acres to Fred Mentze, owner of a Eugene sheet metal shop.

The sales price to the state: $1.4 million. And to Mentze: $245,000.

But Pierce still has plenty of land left to sell along Marcola Road: 31.5 acres designated for medium-density residential u
