MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 2002

Today, Bombardier Transportation (TSX:BBD.A.TO) (TSX:BBD.B.TO), at SkyTrain's new Lougheed Station in Burnaby, B.C., participated in the official ceremony to launch the fully automated 20-km Millennium Line. The occasion

marked the early completion of Bombardier's contract to supply and install the electrical and mechanical (E&M) systems. The Honourable Judith Reid, Minister of Transportation for British Columbia, presided at the celebration, accompanied by dignitaries from TransLink, the regional transportation authority responsible for operating the line.

From the start of physical construction to revenue service, the E&M systems installation for the new line and eleven stations was completed in an unprecedented 33 months, ten weeks ahead of schedule.

The Millennium Line links downtown Vancouver with neighbouring municipalities in British Columbia's Lower Mainland. Sixty new ART MK II vehicles, awarded to Bombardier Transportation under a separate contract, augment SkyTrain's existing fleet of 150 Bombardier-built ART MK I vehicles. The new SkyTrain vehicles are wider, longer and more comfortable than the first generation MK I cars, and operate interchangeably on both the existing Expo and new Millennium Lines. SkyTrain, at 49 km, is the longest fully automated system in the world.

Bombardier's scope of work for the design, supply and installation of the E&M systems included the complete rebuilding of the existing control room without interruption to revenue service; automatic train control, communications and power supply systems; trackwork and power rail; platform and guideway intrusion detection systems; systems engineering and integration; project management; and testing and commissioning of 20 km of dual-track guideway.

Patrice Pelletier, President of Total Transit Systems, Bombardier Transportation said, "Today's launch of the Millennium Line clearly shows that by investing in its transportation system, Greater Vancouver is committed to preserving its reputation as one of the most attractive places in the world to live." He added, "SkyTrain's Expo Line, a world landmark for advanced rapid transit (ART) technology, has played a key role in the development of liveable communities within the Greater Vancouver region. With the addition of the Millennium Line, the expanded SkyTrain network will greatly facilitate the easy movement of people and goods throughout the Lower Mainland."

Other Bombardier transit systems that use Linear-Induction-Motor-powered technology include Canada's Scarborough RT; the 29-km LRT System 2 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and in the United States, Detroit's Downtown People Mover and the soon to be opened AirTrain for New York's JFK's International Airport.
