BELGIUM's first high-speed line opened just over three years ago when King Albert II inaugurated Thalys services on the high-speed link between Brussels and Paris (IRJ December 1997 p4).
Belgian National Railways (SNCB) is also building a 3.8km tunnel beneath Antwerp and a new 40km 300km/h line from there to the Dutch border in order to provide a through-route for high-speed services linking Brussels-Antwerp--Rotterdam--Amsterdam, via the High Speed Line (HSL) South now being built in the Netherlands. The 87km Brussels-Antwerp line has already been upgraded for 160km/h
