The year 2000 saw the opening of two long awaited commuter rail lines and the extension of three others.

Last September 18, Trinity Railway Express ran its first trains beyond the temporary terminal at South Irving to Richland Hills, connecting the Fort Worth suburb with downtown Dallas. There are intermediate stations, including the important one at CentrePort, which provides easy access for travelers and airport workers to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
