S. Korea's Vehicle Trade Has $14.6 Billion Surplus.

South Korea posted a record auto trade surplus of $14.6 billion with foreign countries last year, according to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Despite the gloom surrounding ailing Daewoo Motor, South Korea exported vehicles worth $16.9 billion in 2000 and imported

foreign cars worth $2.3 billion. Vehicle export profits reached $12.9 billion in 1999. Of the $14.6 billion surplus, the trade in completed automobiles accounted for $12.9 billion, followed by trucks worth $710 million.

Car exports to the United States were worth $5.9 billion last year while U.S. car imports amounted to $350 million.

South Korea recorded a surplus of $210 million from exports to European Union countries but registered a deficit of $630 million with Japan in car trade.
