Caterpillar Industrial Products Inc. (CIPI), Peoria, Illinois, has expanded its line of power modules available to a variety of equipment manufacturers. In addition to Caterpillar partial machines and powertrain components, CIPI now offers packaged powertrains
from 60 to 2200 hp.CIPI said its power modules are complete vehicle powertrains for off-highway equipment and locomotives and include mechanical and hydraulic configurations from Caterpillar wheel and track loaders, tractors, excavators, tractor scrapers, skidders, off-highway trucks, articulated tracks, motorgraders and backhoe loaders.
For off-highway machines, CIPI said power modules can include just about any model of Caterpillar engine up to 2200 hp. The engines can be packaged with 14 different powershift transmission families to match machine application requirements. Cat engines can also be coupled with pumps to deliver from 70 to 1470 of hydraulic horsepower.
Twelve planetary drive axles with capacities from 10,000 to 550,000 lb. per axle are also available, as well as complete axle assemblies consisting of planetary final drives, oil-disc brakes and conventional or no-slip differentials. Individual final drives are available in single-, double- and triple-reduction planetary configurations. Final drives developed for hydraulic powertrains are matched to variable displacement hydraulic motors.
An example of the range of power modules available to equipment builders are the 17 different mechanical powertrains derived from the Caterpillar loader/dozer line alone. These can be matched with engines ranging from 48 to 515 hp to provide an engine/torque converter/planetary powershift transmission combination for a specific application. These packages can provide power to one or a group of rigid or oscillating axles, supplied with or without brakes, and with conventional or no-spin differentials. Final drive, brake, hitch and power take-off options are also available.
Other Caterpillar prime product lines provide the componentry for hydraulic power modules. Closed loop hydrostatic systems are available for flywheel requirements from 70 to 210 hp. Open loop hydrostatic systems will, accommodate requirements from 54 to 1470 flywheel hp.
CIPI has also been successful in recent years in marketing a line of track-type tractor and excavator undercarriage systems as well as individual undercarriage components. The undercarriage systems include two track roller frames, track chain and track shoes, track rollers and carrier rollers, idler/track adjuster/recoil mechanism, final drives and parking brakes. They can be standard or customized.
