Local California newspaper the Bay City News (BCN) recently reported that the Sebastopol City Council has voted to approve the purchase of a Ford Escape hybrid sport utility vehicle (SUV) for police chief Jeff Weaver as well as a Toyota Prius hybrid for use by the city's parking enforcement
According to BCN, the Green Party of California worked to help encourage the Sebastopol City Council to purchase hybrid vehicles as a means to curb area greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
"Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this decision is that it is supported by the police chief and city manager," said Green Party and Sebastopol City Council member Sam Pierce. "We are all committed to addressing the most critical challenge of our time, climate change."
BCN said Weaver noted that hybrid vehicles would not be used for patrol purposes, as they do not "suit our needs for safety, service and function."
