Finally a voice that makes some sense on this topic of useless and annoying automation, (Witz End, AI, Nov. 2004, pg. 16). Our previous car, a loaded Passat Wagon (2002) was full of this unpredictable crap, starting with the seemingly random action of the "smart" intermittent wipers, right through

the "adaptive" transmission that changed the car from pussycat to tiger (on acceleration) with no warning at all. I was really quite glad when another family member totaled it, even though we lost money in the insurance settlement. Needless to say, we didn't replace it with another German car.
