Royal Philips Electronics, the Netherlands (www.philips.com), and General Atomics, San Diego (www.ga.com), plan to jointly develop ultrawideband (UWB) wireless communication chipsets and support the standardization process. UWB is high-speed, short-range wireless technology for transferring digital

content between digital-video recorders, set-top boxes, TVs, and PC peripherals at rates to 480 Mbits/sec.

Delivery of the chipsets is expected to dovetail with emerging standards such as IEEE 802.15.3a. GA will benefit from Philips' RF experience and its proven QUBiC semiconductor process technology. And Philips will license GA's Spectral Keying, a multiband UWB technology.

Sales of UWB electronics could reach $1.39 billion by 2007, according to analysts at Allied Business Intelligence.
