ITE once again is proud to be part of National Transportation Week, May 15-21, 2005. National Transportation Week is an opportunity to celebrate achievements in transportation, assess future transportation opportunities and challenges and reach out to the next generation of transportation workers.

National

Transportation Week originated in 1952 with the efforts of Charlotte Jones Woods, who served as the first educational chair of the then newly-formed Women's Transportation Club of Houston, TX, USA and played a leadership role in establishing financial scholarships directed toward encouraging local college students to pursue careers in transportation.

This initiative was enhanced further at the national level in 1962, when U.S. President John F. Kennedy designated the third week in May as National Transportation Week. This time period was selected because of its concurrence with National Defense Transportation Day on the third Friday of May and Maritime Day on the following Saturday.

ITE continues to honor the vision and traditions of Charlotte Jones Woods by sponsoring the winners of the National Transportation Week poster contest, which is open to all fifth graders; maintaining the official National Transportation Week Web site; and engaging ITE's districts, sections and chapters as well as the U.S. Congress to become involved with National Transportation Week projects.
