Australia: Road fatalities among older pedestrians

world transport news

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau recently released a report on pedestrian fatalities in the country. The statistical overview shows that although persons aged 65 and older represent less than one-- eighth of the Australian population, they were victims of about one-- third of the pedestrian deaths in 2001. According to the report, this high representation in the fatality statistics reflects older persons' reliance on pedestrian travel and the deterioration of their perceptual, cognitive and physical abilities. The report is an effort to demonstrate the importance to road safety practitioners of identifying the casual factors of vehicle collisions involving older pedestrians and of using that information in both roadway design and development and implementation of road safety countermeasures.
