VoIP Households Grow More Numerous

More than 9 million U.S. households-almost 8 percent of the total base-now have at least one voice over IP user, and some households even use multiple VoIP services.

That's the report from market researchers at In-Stat, which also found that almost half (49 percent) of residential VoIP users cancelled a traditional phone service when they got VoIR. In addition, almost 12 percent of VoIP users have only a computer-client-based VoIP option, such as Skype or Yahoo Messenger with Voice.

In-Stat also found that Vonage and Time Warner Cable are the leading facilities-based VoIP providers, with 1.7 million households for Vonage and 1.6 million for Time Warner. Skype tops client-based VOIP, with 2.1 million households, with 1.1 million households using Microsoft.

The information is contained in In-Stat's "U.S. Residential Voice over IP Market Dynamics and Market Tracker" service.
