THE 'BRITSOFT' GLOBAL SUCCESS STORY Exports of British video games worth more than film...

Measured in terms of receipts to the UK economy, we estimate that British-developed games generated an export value of [pound]503m in 1998, up nearly 11 per cent from 1997. This is more than the export sums generated by either the British film and TV industries.

Whilst leisure software exports increased in 1998, so did the value of imports (from [pound]192m in 1997 to [pound]284m in 1998). This means that the British leisure software balance of trade actually declined in 1998 to a figure of [pound]218m.
