According to the monthly Boycott Report, U.S. exports to the 18 countries in the Middle East (16 Arab states plus Israel and Iran) soared by 21.7 percent over 1990 but imports (principally petroleum products) dropped by 8.6 percent. Figures for 1990 were distorted by the Gulf War, with U.S. imports increasing by 21 percent over 1989 while U.S. exports remained at the same level as 1989.
