Cellular Phone Features and Accessories

Cellular phones have many useful features and functions. But unless you've spent time learning how to use your new toy, you probably aren't taking advantage of everything your cell phone has to offer. Here's an overview of some handy features and useful tips that will help you effectively use your

new phone. Cell Phone Features

  • Customized ringers. Many phones allow you to personalize your incoming-call ringer. You can choose from short tunes, rings, beeps, on-screen icons, blinking lights, or vibrations. You may also be able to select the volume, pitch, and frequency controls.
  • Coded locks. Locking your phone is a good way to ensure that you're the only one who uses it. Once you activate the lock, you must enter a code on the keypad to turn on your phone. Phones come from the factory with the lock function disabled. Read your instruction manual for directions on how to activate this feature and program a code to replace the factory's default setting, which is usually 1-2-3-4. This is the first code an experienced thief will enter to unlock your phone.
  • Alarms. Phone alarms can be programmed to ring on a certain day and time, and you can set it to remind you to make a call. Some phones even have snooze buttons.
  • One-touch dialing. One-key emergency dialing connects you to local 911 operators with a single touch. Some phones have preset emergency buttons, and others require you to program in the number.
  • Shuttle dial. Many phones include a shuttle dial that lets you scroll through the menu quicker than you can with the arrow buttons. Depending on the manufacturer, this function may also be called rotary, toggle, or smart dial features.
  • E-mail access. E-mail messages can be sent directly to your wireless phone. Most phones display an envelope icon in the upper-right corner of the screen when you receive a message. To check e-mail messages, use either the up-and-down arrow buttons on the keypad or the shuttle dial. Scroll through the menu until you see the appropriate command and push the Select key or the shuttle dial to see the message.

Wireless Phone Accessories

  • Hands-free kit. A hands-free kit makes talking on a wireless phone while driving much safer.
  • Portable charger. If you spend a lot of time in your car, consider a portable charger. It plugs into your car's cigarette lighter and connects directly to your phone. You can use the phone while it's charging but this will increase charge time. Remember to turn on your car's ignition before you plug in the adapter to prevent a power surge.
  • Protective case. A waterproof phone case protects your handset from water damage.
  • Colorful faceplates. Interchangeable clip-on faceplates are available for many wireless phones. Simply remove your phone's faceplate and replace it with a different-colored one.
