Kmart Installs 3,500 Shopping Kiosks In Stores Nationwide.

In an effort to use technology to improve store operations, Kmart and its e-commerce unit BlueLight.com have installed 3,500 Internet shopping kiosks in 1,100 stores nationwide. The self-serve kiosks will allow shoppers to connect directly to the BlueLight.com shopping site to purchase items

that either cannot be found in Kmart stores or that are on sale but are out of stock. Additionally, the kiosks will offer the convenience of delivering hard-to-carry items (such as big-screen televisions) directly to consumer's homes or sent as gifts.

"The BlueLight.com online shopping kiosk is a major cornerstone in our e-selling strategy," said BlueLight.com CEO Mark Goldstein. "Working with Kmart, we are developing multi-channel programs that answer the consumer's needs and wants--no matter where they are, no matter what they are looking for."

Kmart plans to have kiosks in the all of its 2,100 stores by 2002. Recently, Kmart also installed 24,000 new bar code scanners in 1,600 of its stores in an effort to speed up customer check out. Based in San Francisco, CA, BlueLight.com is an independent company formed to leverage the assets of Kmart Corporation, the nation's second-largest discount retailer.
