First commercial operators adopt Ericsson's MPS.

CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2000 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Ericsson has announced the first commercial deployments of its Mobile Positioning System (MPS).

The server-based MPS system enables positioning services to be introduced to a standard GSM network using various positioning

methods including assisted GPS. Ericsson envisages that the rollout of MPS will lead to the introduction of a range of location-based services such as emergency, fleet management, logistics and information services.

The first operator to offer commercial services based on MPS is Estonia-based EMT and other operators on four continents, who are yet to be named, will introduce MPS on their systems during the year, according to Ericsson.
