Samsung Electronics says it has developed a high performance two-chip offering for the high definition television (HDTV) and set-top box (STB) market.
The S5H2010 MPEG-2 decoder and S3C2800 Digital TV CPU chipset integrates key capabilities needed in a HD STB or HDTV for better picture
"The [U.S.] television market is quickly transitioning to digital," observed Don Lee, VP of Samsung's SCC R&D Center. Market research companies In-Stat/MDR and iSuppli Corp. expect the HDTV and HD STB market to reach approximately 5 million and 4 million boxes respectively, by 2005. In addition, the U.S. Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has mandated that all new televisions over 13-inches be digital-ready by 2007.
Closer to home, the Digital TV Forum expects STB sales to top 300,000 in 2004. "In 2005, the total demand will be in excess of 500,000 units, which means there will be over one million units in the market by the end of 2005," Digital TV Forum chairman Ross Henderson said.
The S5H2010/S3C2800 chipset includes a complete development platform and reference design kit with production-ready middleware, device drivers, application software and local technical support, according to Samsung. The initial hardware platform is built on pSOS and Linux embedded operating systems with applications supporting a number of Digital TV and set-top-box market segments.
The S5H2010/S3C2800 chips also serve as a major component in Samsung's line up of newly introduced HDTVs including a 55-inch projection HDTV, Wireless HDTV and Wireless LCD TV.
