World's Leading Smart Card Manufacturers Adopt Entrust/DeviceConnector(TM) to Deliver Scalability, Interoperability and Efficiency to their
Entrust Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: ENTU), a leading global provider of Trust Relationship Management(TM) software and managed services, today announced the availability of its Entrust/DeviceConnector(TM) product, the company's new XML-based solution for smart card manufacturing. It is the industry's first commercial product to deliver XML-based trust services. It allows smart card manufacturers to streamline and automate the issuance of digital certificates, extending trust to smart card-based mobile phones and banking cards.
Gemplus, Oberthur Card Systems and Schlumberger are among the leading smart card manufacturers to adopt this solution. Entrust/DeviceConnector software allows these manufacturers to integrate public-key infrastructure (PKI) technology into existing card management systems (CMSs) to deliver unprecedented scalability and flexibility when Web and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) certificates are being issued to devices and users. Entrust/DeviceConnector software issues and manages these certificates through an XML interface, enabling smart card manufacturers to automatically issue and manage large volumes of certificates.
"This new Entrust product perfectly matches the market's need for a flexible and standards-based tool for commercial certificate issuance in a smart card environment," said Sven Hammar, vice president Americas e-Business security, Gemplus. "Entrust/DeviceConnector software takes advantage of the potential of XML as the language of B2B-commerce, providing a unique and efficient security solution that will further strengthen our joint offering to the Web transaction marketplace."
"The Entrust/DeviceConnector software provides an excellent means of allowing our card management system to obtain digital certificates," said Tim Reeve, director of card management, Oberthur Card Systems. "We are pleased to be working with Entrust Technologies to use Entrust/DeviceConnector software to provide a solution to our customers."
"Entrust solutions are already an integral part of our security implementations for our card-based solutions," said Jean Claude Perrin, director IT & networks smart cards, Schlumberger. "Entrust/DeviceConnector software is an industrial-strength solution that addresses and facilitates security-critical transactions for smart card manufacturers and for users."
Entrust/DeviceConnector software is a component of the new Web Services Trust Framework (please see related announcement) from Entrust Technologies. It takes advantage of the flexibility of the new Web services protocols, like XML, to communicate between a card management system and the PKI. It is flexible enough to work under multiple configurations to accommodate numerous instances of PKI and CMSs and can issue and post certificates to address the business requirements of the customer. For example, in mobile environments, this product can publish certificates to either an LDAP directory or Web server for reference by a mobile device. The mobile device stores only the reference to the certificate instead of the complete certificate, preventing transmission of certificates over the air while simultaneously saving storage space on the smart card and reducing costs.
"Entrust/DeviceConnector software marks an important step forward for our vision of the Web Services Trust Framework as well as our Trust Relationship Management portfolio, allowing users to further extend trust to smart card-based devices," said Paul Doscher, executive vice president of marketing and business development for Entrust Technologies. "Working with leading smart card manufacturers reinforces our commitment to provide our customers with complete, end-to-end and scalable trust solutions."
Device Connector XML Interface (DCXI) and XKMS
The Device Connector XML Interface (DCXI) is the protocol that governs the communication between the Entrust/DeviceConnector product and the CMS. As part of the Entrust Web Services Trust Framework initiative, Entrust Technologies, with its smart card manufacturing partners, plans to extend the DCXI interface to leverage the XKMS standards initiatives. Entrust Technologies plans to include the advanced functionality required by smart card manufacturers into the XKMS standard and include it in future versions of the product.
