SLM Solutions to Ensure Application Availability and

Performance In Showcase Administrative Systems Environment

for Higher Education Institutions

BMC Software Inc. (Nasdaq:BMCS),

the leading provider of e-business systems management, announced today that Wayne State University, a national research university in Detroit, Mich., has selected BMC Software's service level management (SLM) solutions for its integrated, Web-enabled business applications and will participate in BMC Software's OnSite(TM) Certification. The certification signifies that Wayne State University is committed to delivering the highest level of service to its customers and ensuring that they have the optimum e-business experience. As part of the agreement, BMC Software will offer scholarships to Wayne State University students for the next three years. BMC Software Professional Services will assist in the implementation of these SLM solutions.

The integrated systems initiative underway at Wayne State University includes building a showcase administrative systems environment using BMC Software's solutions and Sun Microsystems' hardware to run SCT Corporation's applications, which are used to meet administrative processing needs in approximately 30 percent of the nation's higher education institutions. BMC Software Professional Services will assist in the development of a knowledge module for service level management to ensure the effective performance of the SCT applications suite. "The key element here is that the BMC suite will allow WSU to measure service performance at the user application level rather than the system component level, something I've been seeking for years," said James W. Johnson, vice president for Computing & Information Technology and CIO at Wayne State University.

By improving the availability and performance of its Web-based services, students -- the primary focus of Wayne State's integrated systems initiative -- will be able to go online anywhere, anytime to submit an application for admission, register for classes, actually take classes, check their grades, pay tuition and more. A strong e-business environment will enable Wayne State University to deliver optimal electronic services to all its customers, so faculty and staff can meet the expectations of their jobs and prospective faculty can be recruited from around the globe.

"Like corporate America, higher education is very concerned about anticipating our customers' needs and, here at Wayne State, we're striving to make it easier for people to do business with us. The BMC suite is absolutely vital to our goal of improving how our customers -- current and prospective students and faculty, employees, alumni, businesses, and organizations -- interact with Wayne State," said Johnson.

"BMC's systems management solutions were most impressive in both functionality and price. With these cost-competitive solutions in place, we know they will help us operate a highly available and reliable information systems environment," added John Camp, associate vice president for Computing & Information Technology and Deputy CIO at Wayne State University. "Also, a unique plus was BMC's readiness to stand behind their product and the ease of deployment with their guaranteed sure-start program."

Wayne State University will serve as a national reference site for other higher education institutions looking to right-size their administrative systems environments, and will use BMC Software's PATROL for Unix - Perform and PATROL for Unix - Predict to provide capacity planning and predictive modeling. Wayne State University is implementing a comprehensive suite of BMC Software solutions, including PATROL for Unix - Perform, PATROL for Unix - Predict, PATROL for Microsoft Windows, PATROL for Oracle - Perform, PATROL for Oracle - Predict, PATROL Storage Resource Manager, PATROL for Service Level Management, and SiteAngel(TM).
