HP Debuts New Technologies in One of World's Largest Heterogeneous Storage Area Networks; First to Show Microsoft Volume...

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 2003

At HP ENSA @ Work, the premier European storage networking event, HP (NYSE:HPQ) today unveiled industry-first storage capabilities over a massive, 1,000-port heterogeneous storage area network (SAN). Comprising 10 different operating systems on 15 server hardware platforms, HP's open SAN is an unprecedented showcase for numerous new and soon-to-be-announced technologies that will enable tomorrow's adaptive storage infrastructures.

The HP SAN and new technologies are demonstrations of HP's ENSAextended storage strategy to provide customers with greater ability to adapt to the needs of their businesses. With HP StorageWorks solutions, companies can continue to build, connect and manage rapidly growing storage environments while controlling costs and complexity. HP also is a leader in developing the standards that will provide customers with simplified management of heterogeneous SANs.

"An ambitious SAN of this extreme size and complexity enables us to show advanced management and functionality beyond what any company must deal with today," said Olaf Swantee, vice president, HP Network Storage Solutions, Europe, Middle East and Africa. "HP has tackled some of the most difficult technical challenges to demonstrate to our customers and the world that heterogeneous storage is controllable, resilient and extensible with ENSAextended."

With this showcase, HP becomes the first vendor to demonstrate application integration with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Server 2003 Volume Shadow-Copy Service (VSS) in a NAS/SAN fusion environment. VSS allows programs, such as HP OpenView Storage Data Protector, to get point-in-time copies (snapshots) of disk volumes. Additionally, HP is the industry's first storage vendor to demonstrate VSS on an Intel(R) Itanium(R) platform using the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003.

The massive, HP-funded showcase is designed to rival the data center environments of the most demanding and progressive enterprises in the world. The SAN's infrastructure consists of 66 servers, 23 disk arrays, eight tape libraries, 36 Brocade Silkworm(R) fabric switches and more than 100 host bus adapters. A dozen products from the HP OpenView storage software suite, including HP OpenView Storage Area Manager, enable heterogeneous storage management and functions.

Demonstrations of HP StorageWorks Openness and Innovation

Among the many technology exhibitions at ENSA @ Work, HP will demonstrate the array virtualization capabilities of the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) in a heterogeneous host environment running Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Linux, IBM AIX, HP Tru64, HP OpenVMS and Novell NetWare. The demonstration will feature the new, entry-level HP StorageWorks EVA Model 2C2D and the first public showing of HP StorageWorks Continuous Access software for EVA providing remote data replication.

For the first time at an HP event, ENSA @ Work attendees will see iSCSI technology used to solve common challenges. The HP ProLiant BL10e blade server will be attached to the SAN via iSCSI to enable block-level access to storage for applications in which a network attached storage (NAS) device cannot be used. Also, HP will demonstrate the versatility of iSCSI over a wireless Ethernet network.

The recently announced HP OpenView Continuous Access Storage Appliance (CASA) will be used in the heterogeneous SAN environment with EMC, HDS and HP arrays. CASA enables data replication between arrays from different vendors and seamlessly migrates data from expensive storage systems to more cost-effective modular arrays using virtualization technology. HP will demonstrate local Fibre Channel mirroring as well as mirroring over IP between two data centers.

Other demonstrations in the HP StorageWorks SAN showcase include:

-- A fully automated failover solution across two data centers for heterogeneous clusters of five different operating systems and associated high-availability software using HP StorageWorks Disk Array XP1024 and XP128 systems.

-- DAS-to-SAN migration of drives from an HP ProLiant server to an HP StorageWorks Modular SAN Array 1000, highlighting the investment protection HP provides customers as they move to networked storage.

-- HP StorageWorks and Windows Powered NAS and Linux-based NAS solutions ranging from standalone devices to highly scalable NAS/SAN fusion systems.

-- Several HP OpenView Data Protector scenarios leveraging HP StorageWorks MSL and ESL tape libraries with LTO and SDLT drives. Demonstrated scenarios will include instant recovery, zero downtime back up and one-button disaster recovery.

-- Remote management of intercontinental data replication with HP StorageWorks EVA Continuous Access software.
