QuickBooks Q&A - QuickBooks migration

Q. I have a customer who is currently using quickbooks pro 2005. Will his working file migrate into quickbooks Premier Manufacturing ok or is there prep work to be done first.

A. His file should migrate just fine - there will be no 'prep' work per say, however if you want to use classes you'll need to go set them up after migrating to the new file.  They simply need to open the old data file with the QuickBooks Premier Manufacturing edition...it will convert the data file all by itself.  As with ALL data conversions MAKE SURE they make a backup prior to conversion, just in case.

In addition, just to make sure everyone knows for sure about this conversion...let me clarify a couple of things here.  QuickBooks will convert automatically any data file to a newer version of QuickBooks.  For instance, a 2005 QuickBooks file can be opened with QuickBooks 2006, 2007, or 2008 but QuickBooks IS NOT backwards compatible; meaning that the QB 2005 file cannot be opened in QuickBooks 2004 or a 2008 file cannot be opened by any QuickBooks pre 2008.

One more thing on this subject...mentioned in the question is the customer is using QuickBoosk Pro 2007 and want to migrate to Premier Manufacturing Edition.  This is fine within the same year up upgrading as I mentioned above...the software itself only differentiates year...the premiere accountant, contractor, manufacturing, etc editions only unlocks extra features but doesn't change the data file at all.  So, you can open any data file in any premier edition and still use it in the pro edition providing you didn't upgrade the year version of the QuickBooks program.

Thank you Rob, for the question...I hope this answered your questions completely.  If not, please feel free to e-mail back or if you have more questions - we'd love to address them here.

I've been using Quickbooks Pro Canadian version (2001). However, I'm now back in the US with a US business and I want to migrate to the US online version so my bookkeeper can take over the work. Can I migrate from Canadian desktop to US online versions and keep all my data? Thanks!

QuickBooks Q&A - QuickBooks migration
My apologies for BAD late response here - I never got notice of this question....at any rate perhaps someone else has had this question...

It is my understanding that you cannot migrate your data from Canadian version to US version or visa versa...even from Canadian version to Canadian Version to Canadian Multi-Currency edition is not possible...

It is a possiblity to that data services could make it happen, but I do know that right out of the box - it won't happen.

Thanks for the question....again, I apologize.
