Software Companies, IRS Offer Free Filing.

Jan. 27--Wish you could use one of those fancy, efficient computer programs to do your taxes but can't stand the cost?

You may be able to use one for free.

For the second year, 16 tax-software companies have agreed to let certain taxpayers use their programs for free.

Each company has different criteria for who can do this. The main aim of the IRS, which provides access to the programs through its Web site, is to provide help for lower-income
