WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 1996--Raptor Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: RAPT) today unveiled a new version of its Eagle integrated network security software that addresses the critical-yet-overlooked need to simplify secure mobile communications over the Internet.
Eagle 3.1's application-level firewall technology includes several new enhancements, including dynamic IP addressing for Virtual Private Networks (VPN). Raptor's EagleMobile 3.1, together with the Eagle 3.1 firewall, can accommodate the increasingly common situation of mobile users using different IP addresses for each VPN session to ensure simple and secure Internet-based communications. Raptor Systems is the first network security company to offer VPN for the mobile PC user with its EagleMobile product.
VPN offers the accessibility and the security of a private leased T1 line at a fraction of the cost by setting up secure tunnels over the Internet or corporate networks through which data can travel securely. These authenticated, encrypted tunnels keep data from being accessed or modified as it passes through the Internet. Raptor's VPN technology is of particular significance to organizations of all sizes, which are increasingly using the Internet to achieve and maintain a nationwide electronic distribution channel for their products.
"Our customers, like Raptor's customers, have a growing number of remote users and are concerned about the integrity of their data as it travels across the Internet and other networks," said Mark Stavrou, Internet security product manager, PSINet, Inc., one of the world's largest and technically advanced Internet service providers. "PSINet selected Raptor's Eagle 3.1 products to protect its customers' data because it offers a flexible, comprehensive security solution that enhances the privacy of PSINet's permanent virtual circuit capabilities."
The new version of EagleMobile also enhances authentication for VPN. EagleMobile 3.1 now provides a strong authentication mechanism by supporting one-time usage passwords, such as S/Key, Security Dynamics' SecurID and CRYPTOCARD. With the new enhancements to Eagle 3.1, Raptor offers customers the key component for large scale Internet and Intranet access security and enterprise-wide secure networks.
Eagle 3.1 defined
Raptor's Eagle family is the industry's first real-time, application-level firewall solution, offering advanced features such as access control, authentication, encryption, an exclusive real-time Suspicious Activity Monitor (SAM) and extensive detection, alarm and reporting capabilities. With Eagle, an entire enterprise's network security policy can be created, monitored and maintained from a single workstation.
"Raptor's 3.1 product provides enhanced, transparent desktop- controlled access to the Internet, which is mandatory in our multi-user environment," said J. M. Ivler, Internet specialist at Information Management Associates, Inc., a leading vendor of telebusiness solutions located in Shelton, Conn. and Irvine, Calif. "Connecting to the Internet without a solid firewall solution is the same as swimming with piranhas. Raptor offers a solid solution."
Raptor's Eagle products are based on its Five Domains of Network Security, a comprehensive approach to security that offers the flexibility to add and enhance security within the enterprise as business needs change. Eagle offers users Internet security (Domain 1) with the Eagle firewall. In addition, Raptor offers EagleLAN and EagleDesk (Domain 2) to provide Intranet security, EagleMobile to secure nomadic PCs (Domain 3), EagleRemote (Domain 4) to protect communications between remote offices and corporate headquarters and EagleConnect (Domain 5), which forms a cohesive network security management backbone. Eagle Version 3.1 includes the following additional software enhancements:
SMTP proxy Raptor's Eagle 3.1 offers a simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) proxy that enhances E-mail security by monitoring all SMTP protocol transactions. SMTP is one of the most prevalent protocols on the Internet for exchanging E-mail. The added functionality is significant as companies are increasingly dependent on the Internet for access to the World Wide Web and E-mail to communicate among geographically dispersed internal operations, customers, suppliers and other partners.
HTTP authentication This feature offers Web access controls directly on the firewall. The Eagle 3.1 firewall prompts the Web user for the correct password to gain access, providing network administrators with the ability to enable, disable and enforce a Web access policy on a per-system basis.
Transparency for Generic Service Passer (GSP) Raptor provides a flexible, bi-directional Generic Service Passer (GSP) to allow secure IP-based, non-proxied network services, such as a database management service (DBMS).
"The increased functionality of Raptor's Eagle firewall offers organizations a very high level of network security, enabling them to capitalize, for example, on the Internet as a communications and commerce medium without compromising network integrity," said Robert Steinkrauss, President and Chief Executive Officer of Raptor Systems. "With Eagle 3.1, companies have a strong solution that meets the network security needs of the enterprise, such as Intranet, desktop, mobile PC and remote office users."
