TERA Technologies Introduces EZ-Win -- Personal Accessto Windows 95 Applications and Peripherals...

BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 1998--TERA Technologies, Inc. today introduced EZ-Win(TM), software that allows virtually all X-windows based UNIX workstations and X terminals to remotely run Windows 95 and DOS applications, and access PC peripherals over a local area network.

UNIX system administrators can also use EZ-Win to administer Windows 95 machines over the network.

EZ-Win users can remotely run Windows-based word processors, spreadsheets, presentation graphics, database applications, and other popular applications. EZ-Win works with Windows 95 and uses actual PC hardware to run applications that are not compatible with software-only PC simulators. EZ-Win provides an interface to PC-based hardware such as fax-modems, scanners, CD-ROM writing drives, and instrumentation, as well as allowing DOS applications to be run in their own DOS window. EZ-Win also functions as a virtual docking station for UNIX users who also use Windows 95 laptops. EZ-Win enables them to connect their full-sized UNIX screen and keyboard to their laptop.

"EZ-Win saves me time because I can remotely setup and operate a classroom-based PC and LCD projector from the SPARC in my office. EZ-Win works well, even on a 100 MHz Pentium, and unlike a software simulator, it doesn't consume my workstation's CPU time and memory," said Dr. Richard Auletta, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado. "I especially like EZ- Win's compatibility with networking software such as Samba and TCP/IP," added Dr. Auletta.

Products already in the marketplace, such as shared applications servers based on Windows NT, provide the much needed enterprise- wide Windows access. Their wide-spread popularity demonstrates the need for UNIX users to access Windows applications running on actual PC hardware. However, their initial purchase price, expensive annual support agreements, and heavy demands on system administrators preclude their use on a personal or department level.

By contrast, the low initial purchase price, minimal support costs, and extreme ease of use, make EZ-Win, a personal PC server, perfect for small departments and individual users. In most cases end-users can install EZ-Win without assistance from their system administrator.

EZ-Win runs on any Windows 95 machine and uses Windows' TCP/IP stack. Using the X-windows protocol, EZ-Win sends the keystrokes and mouse events from the X display to the Windows 95 PC, where execution takes place, and sends the display output to a window on the X display. Applications run fast because the server is not shared with other users.

EZ-Win is priced at $395 and is available immediately from TERA Technologies, Inc. at 800/777-7798, or 503/643-4835. Fully functional EZ-Win evaluation software is available free by downloading it from the TERA Technologies web site at www.terainc.com.
