-- New-look NDS electronic program guide (EPG) for Hong Kong's
newest digital service
NDS Group plc, a News Corporation company and a leading provider of technology solutions for digital pay TV, today announced that Galaxy Satellite Broadcasting Limited has commenced trial launch of its digital pay TV service six months after signing a contract with NDS.
The exTV service will provide more than thirty channels that cater particularly to the tastes and interests of the Hong Kong TV audience. It brings the audience a unique mix of innovative quality local programming and quality entertainment from around the world. Galaxy Satellite Broadcasting commenced the exTV technical pilot on December 18, 2003, and the full service is scheduled to commence on February 18, 2004.
NDS supplied conditional access, middleware, set top box integration, a customized electronic program guide (EPG) and two interactive games for the Galaxy service. The new digital offering enables viewers across Hong Kong access to an exciting all-digital multi-channel service.
Ms. Sue Taylor, Vice President and General Manager of NDS Asia Pacific, said that time-to-market is a critical factor for the successful launch of the Galaxy service in the competitive Hong Kong cable and satellite TV market.
"NDS is delighted to have assisted Galaxy in bringing its service to market in such a short timeframe. Galaxy's investment in state-of-the-art digital technology from NDS allows them to offer a new level of quality programming services unequalled in Hong Kong to date. It also provides the most secure distribution platform, allowing Galaxy to reassure content providers that their programming is safe," Ms. Taylor said.
NDS solutions used by Galaxy Satellite Broadcasting include:
-- VideoGuard(TM) conditional access - the system that forms the
basic pay-TV model of 'payment for content' and enhances the
ability to package and sell content.
-- An all-new customizable EPG in English and Chinese languages.
-- NDS Core(TM) - the fully featured middleware that helps
network operators deploy cost-effective set-top boxes quickly
and easily.
-- Value@TV(TM) - the NDS interactive TV platform that enables
broadcasters to build successful interactive TV applications
such as the EPG.
The new-look NDS EPG provided for exTV allows up to seven days of program schedules for all channels. It is fully customizable using design templates, allowing Galaxy to quickly and easily develop its own look and feel to differentiate its service. Galaxy can choose different colors and shapes, such as a border around a scrolling list, as well as add graphic elements such as icons, logos and banners.
NDS solutions have been selected by many of the leading broadcasters in Asia Pacific. In China this includes CCTV Satellite Television Transmission Center, CCTV Channel 5, Chongqing Cable Network, Guizhou Cable Network, Information Network Center (INC) and Sichuan Cable Network. In other Asia Pacific countries this includes: China Network Systems (Taiwan); FOXTEL (Australia); Hathway Cable & Datacom (India), Indovision (Indonesia), SkyLife (Korea), Sky TV (New Zealand) and STAR (Regional).
