Software AG's Web Services Help Companies Make

the Most of Their Existing IT Investments

Software AG, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of Software AG, Europe's largest systems software provider

and a pioneer in XML technologies, today articulated how companies can leverage their existing IT investments while moving to Web services. The company demonstrated how Web services can be deployed in today's IT environments at its Experience 2002 User Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Software AG's wrapper technology, XML messaging, UDDI and native XML storage provide all of the components to deploy Web services today. Corporations can deploy existing mainframe applications to the Web quickly and cost effectively.

Most companies implementing Web services need to either leverage existing mainframe applications or they need to build new Web services in their current IT environments. Software AG's solutions offer standard Internet technologies to allow companies to integrate IT systems with a minimum of effort while extending existing application solutions.

Texas A&M University, a Software AG customer, has deployed Software AG's EntireX as part of its Web services solution. "With over 44,000 students, we wanted to present our students with an easy, quick and efficient way to register for classes. The challenge was to leverage our multiple back-end systems while providing developers with a flexible XML-based tool that would allow them to reuse the pre-existing code in a Web environment," said Tim Chester, Senior IT Manager at Texas A&M University. "EntireX was the best solution for the job because it cut the development time in half and reduced errors by allowing developers to reuse code from a variety of sources. As a result, Texas A&M has a more efficient student registration system that can serve thousands of students simultaneously, providing them access to critical student information via the Web."

"To build electronic business applications a common, standards-based method of exchanging information between disparate systems is required. That is the void XML-based standards and Web services are filling," said Gary Voight, President and CEO of Software AG, Inc. "For Software AG, enabling Web services is nothing new. We have a proven track record in delivering innovative solutions to support mainframe applications and continue to lead the worldwide market with award-winning XML products."

Voight continued, "Web services is the `killer application' for XML, similar to how the browser was the `killer application' for the Internet. Over time, many companies will replace existing middleware systems with Web services based systems."

With more than 30 years of software industry experience in application development, integration and database technology, Software AG is uniquely positioned to provide the tools for Web services. As standards and the adoption of Web services progress, Software AG will continue to be at the forefront of providing leading-edge technology to enable companies to leverage all that Web services has to offer.

How Software AG Products Fit Into the Web Services Framework

Software AG's EntireX and Tamino products provide customers with a unified XML system that delivers robust back-end database information to a flexible media server.

EntireX

EntireX is Software AG's highly flexible and easy-to-use component-based solution for integrating enterprise applications across heterogeneous operating systems. With its wrapper technology, EntireX offers application integration at high speed - both, in terms of implementation time and performance. Its powerful SOAP, WSDL and XML capabilities provide a Web services platform making EntireX the product of choice when connecting to mainframe applications. By connecting previously disparate worlds, EntireX enables enterprises to lay the foundation for seamless implementation of electronic business applications.

In conjunction with Web services, EntireX can:

-- act as an UDDI repository "out of the box"

-- act as an audit and tracking server for XML documents--the "payload" of Web
services

-- integrate virtually any remote data source into a Web Service architecture

Tamino

Tamino is Software AG's multiple award-winning, native XML Server. Tamino XML Server stores and processes XML data without the need for data conversion. This means that Tamino is faster, more flexible and more efficient than other systems that have to continually deconstruct and reconstruct XML before they can process, output or store it. Tamino users benefit from shorter response times and the fact that XML is an accepted standard data format for the Internet.

In conjunction with Web services, Tamino can:

-- act as an UDDI repository "out of the box"

-- act as an audit and tracking server for XML documents--the "payload" of Web
services

-- integrate virtually any remote data source into a Web Service architecture

Through initiatives such as UDDI and Web services, XML-based communication is becoming the universal format for data exchange.
