Intuit (http://www.intuit.com) announced the other day that they're going into beta for The Quickbase Developer Program, which allows developers to create Web applications for small businesses that connect with QuickBooks and host them on QuickBase. This is a very interesting project because so many small businesses revolve around QuickBooks so the ability to create rich internet applications (or RIAs) which use QuickBooks and QuickBase as a back end could be very helpful. The ability to build workflow and sophisiticated applications around QuickBase could help a lot of businesses.
Intuit is courting the developer community to help build this, and they've based the development tool on the Eclipse IDE from IBM which I've used and is very easy to get around in. "We are now enlisting the help of an enormous community of talented developers to create innovative, rich Web-based solutions to important business problems," said Bill Lucchini, vice president and general manager of Intuit QuickBase. "To ensure developers can continue to innovate we're also providing them with the fastest and easiest way to build a profitable Software-as-a-Service business."
he QuickBase Developer Program is now available in closed beta to a limited amount of participants. The beta program is intended to gather feedback from developers. For more information about the QuickBase Development Environment or to apply for early access to the program, please visit: http://quickbase.intuit.com/partners/developer-program. There is no charge for the development tools. The intention is that when you write a program and run it there will be a charge for the program components.
This could really help small businesses. Imagine having your inventory, POS, web site, billing - just about everything you do - automatically and transparently use QuickBooks as a back end to store data. Then there will only be one place where you'd have to look for business related information, one place for reports, and it is all tied into your current financial status. Pretty cool, huh?
