It is important for Web site designers to clear copyrighted works that will be incorporated into their designs because the mere act of borrowing a GIF from another Web site can trigger a copyright lawsuit. Alterations done on a work to make it unrecognizable to a layman is still legally infringing on a copyright. Getting clearance from an author, however, is complex. Rights have to be cleared with the content's original owner; permission from people in a photo the actors in a film clip, or even the advertisers whose billboards or promotions are visible in an image also have to be sought.
