Web Communications expands service to include POP e-mail and virtual hosting.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 1996--Web Communications (http://www.webcom.com), the world's largest Web Hosting and Service Provider, today announced a major expansion of its service offerings with the addition of POP e-mail and Virtual Hosting.

POP e-mail service, the industry

standard for Internet e-mail, allows customers to read, send, respond to, and manage their e-mail using any POP e-mail, program, such as Netscape Navigator or Eudora. For each e-mail box, the customer can choose an e-mail address of the form username@theircompany.com. Each POP e-mail address has its own login and password for controlling access to the e-mail box.

Also, Web Communications now offers Virtual Hosting, a feature that permits customers who choose to register their own domain name (a service also offered by Web Communications) to have a home-page URL, (Uniform Resource Locator) of the simple form http://www.companyname.com/.

"With the addition of these new services, our customers can select intuitive e-mail and Web addresses that make it easier for their customers to find them," said Chris Schefler, president of Web Communications. "Establishing this type of Internet presence and communications infrastructure in the past would cost a company tens of thousands of dollars and require the installation and configuration of special hardware and software. Now, anybody with Basic Internet access can have their own domain complete with a web site and e-mail boxes hosted on high-speed servers for a nominal monthly fee, simply by filling out our online application forms with their Web browser."

At no extra charge, WebCom customers can take advantage of many value-added services, including: bulk distribution and auto responders for e-mail, and, for their Web site, full-text searches; custom fill-out forms for taking orders, surveys, and other applications; password-protected Web pages; clickable image maps; and site activity reports, among others. WebCom self-service online tools, services, and tutorials allow any customer to take advantage of these extended features with no special technical knowledge. Free technical support is provided if the customer encounters any difficulty.

Customers with no knowledge of HTML coding can create their Web pages using WebCom's Instant Site Service or third party Web authoring tools such as Netscape Navigator Gold. WebCom does not provide Internet access. The customer must have basic access from the Internet Service Provider or online service of their choice in order to open a WebCom account; but, no special software beyond a web-browser and POP e-mail client is required. This allows the company to efficiently serve a global market. The company currently hosts Web sites for 2,048 customers in 40 countries, the highest number served by any dedicated Web Hosting service.

Web Communications was founded in May, 1994 by Chris Schefler and Thomas Leavitt to provide innovative easy-to-use tools, resources and services designed to assist individuals and organizations to publish and communicate effectively and affordably on the global Internet.
