Does your Home Business Website have a Privacy Statement?

Thursday, May 8 2008

There are a lot of elements that make up a good website. Many of them will help to give your website creditably. The Privacy Statement is one of those things. Everyone wants to know how their information is being used particularly if they're going to be using a credit card. A good privacy statement should address the following issues.

What information is collected - be specific about the type of information being collected if any. If you don't collect any personal information, say so. If you need to use cookies, say so, but describe specifically what is being done.

Use of email - How will you use their email address? Most business use the privacy statement to assure their site visitors the email address will only be used to convey order specific or customer specific information. If you use an opt-in system, let them know what how opt-in system will be used.

Credit Card Protection - How will you protect their sensitive data like credit card numbers? Is your site PCI compliant? If so state as much.

Information protection - How will information be protected? If it's encrypted, then state that in the privacy statement.

Blogs and commenting- If you have a blog hanging off your site, how will the commenter's information be used or not used?

I'm not sure how many people read each and every bit of a privacy statement, but most web experts agree that the existence of a privacy statement is important. A link on every page to your Privacy Statement will show your site visitors that you mean business.
