The headline of this month's "Tech Time" column includes strong statements about a technology that has made great strides in many markets. But the approach taken by traditional GISs prevents the technology from achieving its full potential at an enterprise level.

This isn't a knock on planners and geographers. The power they have to display information graphically isn't to be trivialized, but they aren't computer scientists. To succeed at the enterprise level, it's necessary to satisfy the information technology (IT) professionals, who are computer scientists.
