MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1998--Quantum Corp. (NMS:QNTM) and Digital Equipment Corp. (NYSE:DEC) today announced that Digital will offer Quantum's new Rushmore(TM) Ultra solid state disk (SSD) technology, which provides near-instantaneous access to time-critical information.
Using DRAM to store the data, the new solid state disks deliver 100 to 200 times the performance of conventional disks: 8,000 I/O requests per second with access times of less than 60 microseconds. The addition of five new Quantum SCSI-3 SSD drives more than doubles the size of Digital's solid state disk StorageWorks family, while extending available capacities from 134 MB to 1.6 GB -- the highest capacity of any solid state disk.
StorageWorks customers can now choose between SCSI-2 and SCSI-3 interfaces, as well as 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch form factors, with models housed in convenient "plug and play" carriers.
Digital has tested and qualified the five new StorageWorks drives for its AlphaServer family running Digital UNIX, Windows NT, and OpenVMS, and on Sun platforms under Solaris. The StorageWorks drives can be directly attached in high-performance mode to Alpha and Sun platforms via an adaptor, or linked with Digital's high performance StorageWorks Raid Array and Enterprise Storage Array family.
"SSD technology is the single fastest way to access stored data, and we're happy to be working with Quantum to provide it to our StorageWorks customers," said Kirby Wadsworth, Digital's vice president of storage marketing. "These products significantly improve performance of key applications. For example, StorageWorks SSD products are finding growing acceptance in the financial industry -- particularly among securities traders -- as well as in data warehousing and data mining applications, online transaction processing, video streaming and Internet services -- all applications where near instantaneous data access is required."
Other industries that can benefit from the lightning-fast access speed of StorageWorks SSD include travel, telecommunications, manufacturing, transportation and insurance.
"Digital was one of the first to recognize the value of solid state disk technology, and has pioneered the use of Quantum's SSDs in complementing cache and RAID configurations," said Sharon Ostiguy, Quantum's SSD marketing manager. "With today's announcement, Digital will provide one of the widest range of solid state disk capacities in the industry, giving its customers a variety of price points, capacities, and throughput."
Price and availability
The new StorageWorks solid state disks are aggressively priced at $30/MB and are available now.
