NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 20, 2000
EarthStation Will Gain Multi-Gigabit Network Capacity Within
Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and Between the Cities
Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (MFN) (Nasdaq:MFNX), the leader in deployment of optical IP Internet infrastructure within key metropolitan areas internationally, will provide fiber-optic infrastructure to EarthStation Netaxs (EarthStation), a first-Tier Internet Service Provider (ISP).
MFN will lease fiber to EarthStation throughout the downtown and surrounding suburban areas of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., as well as provide long-haul capacity between the cities.
Using MFN's optical Internet backbone, EarthStation will provide its clients with high-speed, high-bandwidth Internet applications and connectivity. EarthStation, a regional ISP in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast corridors, provides dedicated Internet access to businesses, educational institutions and other ISPs. The network and its associated equipment are capable of delivering 32 times more capacity than an OC-192, or the equivalent of 9.9 gigabits per second. In addition, the redundancy of the network will enable EarthStation to reduce significantly chances of a network outage and will allow the company to deliver its Internet traffic to other networks quickly and cost-effectively.
"MFN's optical Internet infrastructure allows service providers like EarthStation to offer Internet access at broadband-level capacity, enabling an entirely new class of bandwidth-intensive applications," said Nick Tanzi, president and chief operating officer of Metromedia Fiber Network. "Through this agreement, EarthStation will gain access to unshared, fully scaleable bandwidth at a fixed cost, allowing the company to deliver its full suite of Internet solutions, such as T-1 to OC12+ level IP connectivity, high-speed DSL, Web hosting, e-commerce, and Internet-smart buildings."
"MFN's infrastructure will allow us to provide our customers with a network that is one hundred percent optimized for IP traffic and to add bandwidth quickly as our customer base and our customers' needs grow," said Jeff Pasquale, president and CEO of EarthStation Netaxs. "We will 'light up' two-gigabits of the network immediately to further position EarthStation Netaxs at the forefront of the Internet industry in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast."
