ICANN

ICANN was formed as a non-profit corporation under sponsorship of the United States Department of Commerce to assume responsibility for co-ordinating the management of the domain name system, the allocation of IP address space, the assignment of protocol parameters and the management of the root server system. Previously, one company controlled the registry for .com, .net and .org domains and was deemed to be a monopoly. The aim of ICANN is to create a competitive market in order to give the consumer a choice and therefore a better deal.
