The prevalence of Internet offers strong technical support as well as exciting new opportunities for medical professionals and medical information systems. In particular, web-based visual communications of medical data most of which are pictorial in nature will play an important role in remote consultation/education among doctors, and between doctors and their students and patients.

Remote visualization refers to an interactive visualization process acted on large data sets at remote sites via internet or other communication links. Remote visualization is becoming a hot topic in telemedicine research.

One way to maximize the utility of state-of-art expensive medical imaging systems and large valuable image databases is to allow remote access to these resources. This can not only improve cost-effectiveness of but also improve the quality of medicare by facilitating remote consulting by experts and by supporting distant medical education.

The Company envisions a possible scenario of remote visualization of medical data as follows. There are one or few powerful server(s) that have access to central image databases, and are equipped with high rendering power for real-time visualization. But there are many more relatively inexpensive client machines used by individual doctors, students, or clinics. The clients communicate to the server via internet or ISDN lines, and specify, via a graphical user interface, the particular viewing angle and cross sections on the 3D volume data.

"We propose to develop a wavelet-based video compression engine for remote visualization of 3D ultrasound images," stated NTEC President Robert Noll. NTEC MEDIA GmbH has developed, under the direction of Professor Xiaolin Wu who is a world authority in image compression, the ECECOW (Embedded Conditional Entropy Coding of Wavelets, patent pending) technology that has the best compression performance among all existing image compression methods.

The ECECOW technology is being evaluated by JPEG 2000, the next international standard for image compression. The ECECOW video coder offers the following features that are very important for remote visualization via relatively low bandwidth channels like internet.

A single unified code stream of compressed data set is stored at the central database. No multiple copies of the same data set are created by the server to satisfy different clients with different visualization parameters and at different trade-offs between quality and bandwidth.
