Japan, China and South Korea agreed to make Asian economies less dependent on Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system, Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Takeo Hiranuma said.
Hiranuma said he made the proposal during a meeting with Chinese Commerce Minister Lu Fuyuan and South Korean Trade Minister Hwang Doo Yun. The new software will be built into computer servers and Internet-enabled appliances, such as next-generation cellular phones, Japanese officials said.
