Apple Ships Server, Plans To Release Code for Its OS.(Mac OS X Server)(Product Announcement)

APPLE COMPUTER last week shipped its Mac OS X Server operating system and announced it will release the code to the operating system under an open source license. The source release makes Apple the first major vendor of a modem commercial operating system to release its code to developers.

Mac OS X Server, which grew out of technology Apple acquired by purchasing NeXT Software, is based on the Mach microkernel and BSD 4.4, with a user interface combining features of the Mac OS and the NeXTStep environment.
