Unfortunately, Mr. Austin is correct in his assessment of many American journalists today. Many still rely on press releases for their reporting, while failing to do their own research. It hurts the media's content (logos) and credibility (ethos), but journalists all over the country will still eat that greasy hamburger fed to them by public relations firms. Just because it's a black eye on the journalism field, however, it does not mean pr firms should shut down their burning barbecues ; for, if journalists continue to be lazy, pr firms are in a position to take advantage.

This is a good article but this is what I am looking for. I have a website and many Social site accounts. I would like to use my Sony digital camera more but I do not know how to reduce the pixels down to 100. If you know how to do this respond or visit my website and suggest how I can upload 100 megapixel pictures using my Sony digital camera.

Dave, I think many (very small) businesses will appreciate info such as this, especially in the beginning stages. It's great that there is such a service that caters specifically to small companies with its low fees - $7.95/month is affordable for every budget. One word of caution would be for your friend to research and invest in user-friendly, affordable security solutions, especially for email. At this point in the business' development, it'll be important to secure any marketing plans, original business ideas, customer data and any other vital company info.

great post Dave! Worth mentioning are the fun secondary uses Hamachi can have, aside from business (LAN gaming and sharing iTunes libraries comes to mind). I use it both at home and work. I think it should be noted as well that Hamachi was recently purchased by Logmein; a move that I think could work out extremely well for both companies. they announced on the hamachi forums that the program will stay free, which I think is the right thing to do.

This is hard work and takes time but only with such a map can the outsourcer handle the customer delivery.

I really like Skype. I enjoy the free voice chatting. I am really happy that ebay and pay pal is merging. I agree completely, for our first six years, we focused on the enterprise and Government markets. Over the last 18 months we have seen a rapid change in the SMB IT market and have developed a seperate business unit solely to concentrate in that arena.

Jennifer, Blogging for business is generally a good idea. It can bring a more human feel to corporate communications if done right. Blogs can also be an important tool for expressing the insights of a company's thought leaders, participating in the conversation around a company's space, and driving good PR ( in the blogosphere and traditional media). Good business blogs have an authentic voice don't read like sterile PR copy. As far as your school's firewall: there are probably ways to get around it but you'll need to consult someone more intimate with your school's tech infrastructure. I'd trawl the math dorm until you find a suitable nerd for that project.

Great column, very useful--thanks, I'll try some of the alternatives you suggest. iTunes is indeed a beast. And sometimes it's not easy to figure out why it's uploading stuff sometimes and not other times. But worst of all, it won't accept locked music from other sources. I bought a tune from Buy.com and iTunes won't accept it because Buy.com uses a different DRM. Good for Apple. Bad for tribe.

Dave, I agree! I've always said the iPod would be far more useful if it were a wireless-integrated device and did not require a hard-wired connection to a PC and the PC Software to update it. Having said that, I have experienced problems with the Apple software in the past, but the latest version seems to be fairly stable. Also, you didn't mention Podcasts. One of the primary things I use the iPod for is to download and listen to PodCasts. I notice that Podcast files are really just mp3 files though, and I doubt there is anything special about them that some other player couldn't handle.

Great Advice Dave, I don't know about everyone else, but sometimes on notebooks/laptops they skimp on USB ports by design. I think there should be at least 3 and I totally agree that the buyer should splurge on Memory.

Congratulations for choosing this topic for your blog instead of the next topic whose title is "Welcome" where you choose to explain what you'll cover. Probaly people would not have gone on to see your next topic if that were the case. The point every one misses is not that you have a camera phone. The pont is that you have a phone that is capable of driving the laptop out of the market. The only reason it is not doing so is that the phone manufacturers and the Piracy victims are misguided. If they wake up the cellphone manufacturers will stop wadsting their resources on minor achievements. Rather they'd go after major achievements like financially supporting the drive to make the server oriented web surfing a reality.
