Hong Kong plans unified wireless broadband licence.

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Plans for a unified licensing system to issue licences for wireless broadband services in Hong Kong in 2006 have been revealed.

According to the Office of the Telecommunications Authority, all fixed and mobile operators

will be subject to the same regulations under a unified licensing system.

The authority had originally suggested a "unified carrier" licence for Hong Kong's fixed-line providers. This would have resulted in mobile phone providers having to pay HKD1m for a fixed-line licence in order to participate in the wireless broadband market and was seen as an unfair advantage for the fixed-line carriers.
