Nowadays, most mobile phones come equipped with a mobile web browser. While many sites viewed on our PCs (especially media rich sites) don't view well in a mobile browser, there are quite a few sites with text and pictures that are very readable on the average phone's browser. A mobile web user has accsss to lots of news and text based information nowadays--although make sure you have a dataplan in place before you start phone surfing--it can get really expensive if you're not careful.  Here's a list of some good sites for information on the go:

http://www.google.com/pda
Mobile Google search site.

http://news.google.com/news?output=xhtml
Mobile Google News. Get all the mainstream news you need here.

http://www.google.com/reader/m/
The mobile version of Google Reader. Get mobile access to all your favorite RSS feeds here.

http://wikipedia.7val.com/
A mobile version of Wikipedia. Great for background info and settling all sorts of bets.

http://us.wap.yahoo.com/
Yahoo! Mobile.  You can check your email, weather, read news etc. at this Yahoo! mobile site.  Works pretty well, although some phone browsers may not support the WAP protocol which this site uses.  Give it a shot though.

http://www.google.com/gwt/n
Google's Mobile Trancoder.  Just plug this URL into your phone and then plug in the site you want to see.  Google will then reformat your desired site into something more readable on a mobile phone.

http://www.skweezer.net
This site is in the same category as Google's Mobile Transcoder. Although, this one is a bit nicer with lots of pre-shrunk sites, and the ability for a user to create their own home page of mobile sites.
