Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone Users--Browser Options

Sunday, April 15 2007

For those of us using Windows Mobile 5 smartphones like the T-Mobile Dash, Cingular Blackjack, and Motorla Q, there aren't many good mobile web browsers available for our phones. Below is a list of the options/non-options:

Internet Explorer Mobile: This is the browser that comes with the phone. It's okay, and there aren't any upgrades for it.

Opera Mobile: Opera Mobile is a mobile browser which has a reputation for being really good at optimizing pages for display on a small screen. The beta version for Windows Mobile Smartphone has just been released. I haven't had a chance to play around with it, but I'll write more after I do.

Opera Mini: Opera Mini is the java version of Opera for mobile phones. You can run it on a Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone, but it just doesn't look or feel that great. And you have to access it as a java program. I'd rather use the included version of Internet Explorer.

Minimo: This is the mobile version of the open source Mozilla browser. It's free, and it looks promising, but it doesn't work all that well on my T-Mobile Dash. Very slow and at a very early stage in its development.

Deepfish: This is Microsoft's newest mobile browser and it looks really promising. It is available for Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone, from early reports looks good. But, it is in a closed beta stage right now, and not openly available.

Others: There are some other alternatives, but I didn't find any worth writing about.
