Most of the time engineers and designers spend doing a finiteelement analysis is actually spent generating a mathematical model. Though this model is an inseparable part of FEA, its existence is rarely acknowledged and its purpose often unknown. But knowing more about the math model improves engineering understanding of FEA and how to interpret results.
PREPROCESSING
Constructing a solution-ready FEA model involves several steps which are often lumped together under the con(using term of preprocessing. The starting point is almost always a CAD model, only rarely is model geometry constructed in FEA software. Many FEA users think CAD models are converted to FEA models simply by meshing them, and that FEA models are the same as CAD models, except the geometry is split into many small elements.
