Parametric features bring new vitality to analysis

The recent introduction of parametric features to finite-element-analysis software lets designers examine several different loads, material, and constraints at one time. Another big plus comes from the link between CAD and FEA software that lets the analysis program change features on a solid model before beginning another run. No additional language or scripting is need.

"Turning CAD geometry into parameters that can be adjusted by simulation software is the most interesting aspect of the new capability," says Tim Pawlak, a Corporate Fellow with Ansys Inc., Pittsburgh. "It lets designers easily see changes in performance caused by changes in their parametric designs. This is because CAD parameters are equally available in the simulation software, such as DesignSpace from Ansys Inc. Users can just as easily make changes in loads and materials," he says. In the process, the simulation software tells the CAD system to update the model and send back new geometry for reanalysis. The simulation program then computes a new solution for stresses, factors of safety, fatigue life, and others parameters.
