MTI To Become Founding Member To Offer Expertise To Standards
Body And Aid The Successful Growth Of The Emerging
Network Attached Storage Market
MTI Technology Corp. (NASDAQ:MTIC) Monday announced it will become a founding member of the Storage Networking Industry Association so that the company may offer its expertise to the industry to more fully define the standards and enable the infrastructure necessary for the successful growth of the emerging Network Attached Storage (NAS) market.
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) will be a consortium of storage, networking and operating system companies cooperating to establish the standards necessary to provide interoperability of networked storage systems attached to storage area networks (SANs), local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs). Representatives of more than 80 companies, including MTI, met last month in San Francisco to establish the charter for the organization.
"Storage Area Networks, or networks dedicated to storage, are becoming a very logical choice for many IT environments," said Earl Pearlman, MTI president and chief executive officer.
"By attaching storage directly to the dedicated SAN, users are able to isolate file I/O and not impact overall network performance while still enjoying the benefits of network-attached storage. The decision to join SNIA as a founding member will allow us to offer the association our technological expertise to help bring storage networking standards to the industry. By developing standards and cooperation between industry leaders, technological advances will occur at a quicker pace."
Storage Area Network and Network Attached Storage technologies are similar in that they both enable data to be available on the network and shared by multiple clients and servers without impacting performance of the network. In effect, the storage system is outside the server system and on the network. This means the storage systems can be distributed across the enterprise or be in a centralized location apart from the servers.
"Storage networking based on well defined standards will allow companies to move quickly to move mission-critical client/server computing from the data center to the network," said Kevin J. Liebl, MTI vice president of marketing. "MTI has a complete storage networking product strategy in place that will help our large customer base deploy mission-critical applications quickly and easily across the network."
"We are very pleased to have MTI in a leadership role with the SNIA," said Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corp. in Santa Barbara, Calif., and the current SNIA facilitator. "This new association's objectives are absolutely consistent with customer needs and MTI's direction and expertise."
MTI's mission is to be the premier provider of high-performance, cross-platform data storage management solutions for the enterprise. MTI integrates distributed data management software, a hierarchy of modular storage systems and on-site services to meet the mass storage needs of its customers.
With headquarters in Anaheim, the company offers services and support from more than 40 offices in the United States and Europe.
