Video-On-Demand Technology Enhances Campus Education
Concurrent Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:CCUR) announced today that Wake Forest University recently purchased a MediaHawk Video Server to deliver educational- oriented video to both teachers and students by implementing Video-On- Demand (VOD) technology. Concurrent's MediaHawk Video Server system will allow for on-demand streaming of the university's library of video resources to networked locations throughout the campus. Wake Forest University's decision to implement VOD technology is another example of the university's effort to provide its students with the most technically advanced, progressive education tools.
The MediaHawk Video Server system will enable students to access educational video resources from any networked location on campus, such as the classroom or library. VOD technology will benefit the faculty as well - faculty will no longer have to "check out" VHS tapes from the library and then use TV and VCR equipment for displaying the videos. Instead, teachers will access the university's video library directly from a PC in the classroom. With the PC
connected to a projection device, video presentations become easy and accessible.
MediaHawk Video Servers, which incorporate Concurrent's innovative system architecture, provide scalable performance capable of delivering from tens to thousands of simultaneous MPEG1 and/or MPEG2 digital video streams over Ethernet, ATM, and cable networks. Each stream delivered by the MediaHawk is completely independent and interactive. Users are able to select, play, pause and stop each digital video stream independently with prompt and predictable response times. Furthermore, these video streams are delivered with no degradation to performance or video quality regardless of the number of digital video streams concurrently supported.
Wake Forest selected Concurrent's MediaHawk Video Server because it met all of its application requirements. Among these requirements included the MediaHawk Video Server's compatibility with IBM ThinkPad clients - an absolute necessity since each undergraduate at Wake Forest University has an IBM ThinkPad. The MediaHawk Video Server is extremely scalable, allowing the university to expand the system in the future as its needs grow. Wake Forest was also impressed by the superb quality of the MPEG1 and MPEG2 video delivered by the MediaHawk. Lastly, Concurrent's proven ability to provide custom engineering ensured Wake Forest that Concurrent would support its effort to deliver a fully integrated Intranet solution.
Jay Dominick, Chief Information Officer, Wake Forest University, stated, "Wake Forest is committed to providing the best education tools available to its students and faculty. We decided that implementing video-on-demand technology would be the next logical step to enhancing our offerings. We chose Concurrent's MediaHawk Video Server for its superior technology and because it offered the scalability and compatibility we required."
"I am pleased Wake Forest University has selected Concurrent's MediaHawk Video Server to bring video-on-demand to its campus," commented Corky Siegel, Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer, Concurrent Computer Corporation. "VOD will revolutionize the way students and faculty access resources on campus. VOD provides convenience and accessibility. Wake Forest's decision to replace its analog tape technology with digital video shows a trend at educational institutions, and elsewhere, where VOD is becoming the preferred method of training and data distribution." Founded in 1834, Wake Forest University (http://www.wfu.edu) is a private, four-year liberal arts institution in Winston-Salem, N.C.
