The Church On The Way in Van Nuys, CA, assured that young students would find their classrooms by color-coding the hardware on the doors of its new educational building. The new building, known as The Lamb's House, provides classrooms and facilities for child ministry from birth through sixth grade. To help the young children find the proper classroom, the church color-coded the lever trim, door stops and hinges with a different color for each age group. Signs in the hallways are color-coded using the same system.
For the colored door hardware, Gaede-Larson Architects in Pasadena, used Hewi lever trim and Hager hinges. To provide the students with a safe exit in an emergency, the interior of the doors for classrooms and other facilities were equipped with Von Duprin 99 Series touchpad fire and panic exit devices which interfaced effectively with the Hewi trim. Although Von Duprin offers devices in matching colors, these were not color-coded because of their location inside the rooms. Exterior narrow-style doors used Von Duprin 33 Series touchpad exit devices and Hewi nylon color-coordinated pulls.
The 12,000 sq. ft. two-story building is of modular construction. It was furnished and erected by Incon Building Systems Inc., which provided a large volume of space in a short time frame. Only the elevator and stair towers were built on-site, after the rest of the modular structure was erected and installed.
