IBM has VR package...IBM Corp. scientists have developed workstation software that allows users to create their own virtual reality programs. Called the VR Toolkit, IBM says the software culminates four years of research by its Virtual Worlds Group and offers practical virtual-reality applications. Virtual reality uses advanced computer technologies to create realistic, three-dimensional and even multisensory experiences. Up to now, it has been used mostly in the entertainment field.

Chris Codella, a member of the IBM Virtual Worlds Group, says the VR Toolkit is designed to meet anticipated demand for virtual reality tools from engineers, architects, designers, doctors, scientists, teachers, and marketing and sales people. The software uses a modular design that enables users to piece applications together even while the package is operating. Modules include the VPL DataGlove, Polhemus 3Space, FASTRAK trackers, a 3D mouse, stereo 3D displays and a 3D graphics generator. The software is designed for use in UNIX workstations, including IBM's RS-6000.
