Should I Buy Windows or Apple Computers for My Company?

Buying computers for your business can be a nerve-racking

experience. But before you even get started, you need to answer an important question: Should you buy Windows or Apple computers?

The answer depends on what you need from your computer system. Once you compare the features of each system, the choice should be clear.

Windows

  • There are more PCs on the market today than there are Mac systems. Most large companies, particularly those that process lots of financial data, rely on PCs. Created by Microsoft, PCs are sold by many well-known companies like Dell, Compaq, and others.
  • You can purchase a budget PC for less than a thousand dollars, if you shop carefully and compare prices and features. Because of the competition among the various manufacturers and retailers, it’s possible to get a system for much less than you'd pay for a comparable Mac system.
  • If your business is small, then you might get away with purchasing home PCs. But if the demands of your business are more than a personal PC can deliver, then you will need to upgrade to a business-class system. Those units can be purchased for about $3,000. Again, it pays to shop around for specials and discounts.
  • A Windows operating system allows you to run multiple programs and multitask. However, the Windows OS is prone to virus attacks, and Windows owners must constantly install new patches from Microsoft to protect their systems.
  • More software programs are available on a PC system. From programs for home-based businesses, educational institutions, to countless number of game programs, the Windows PC has the lion’s share of this market.

Apple

  • Apple's Macintosh computers make up less than ten percent of the overall market in the United States. Many Mac users are fanatically devoted to the Mac brand, but when it comes right down to it, it’s a personal choice.
  • Mac computer systems have a very strong graphic and multimedia component, which makes them popular among educational institutions, graphic designers, artists, and others.
  • Mac systems are generally more secure than PCs. In fact, they are nearly impervious to viruses and other malware programs.
  • Prices for Mac systems do vary, and these days are in line with Windows PC systems. Still, if you are seriously considering switching from a PC to a Mac system, make sure you know what you are buying. Don’t just rely on the sales clerk at the local electronics superstore to give you advice. If you don’t understand something, find an expert who can give you the real scoop. A little time and research ahead of time will save you some money down the road.

The bottom line on this decision is this: It depends on what type of business you are in, and what your computer needs really are. Some small businesses have a few of each computer system in their offices. While it is possible to network Macs and PCs, it can difficult.
